These two damaged envelopes were recovered from the Panagra Mail Plane NC 15065 flying on Foreign Air Mail route FAM 9 on the leg from Guayaquil in Ecuador. The plane crashed into the sea in the Mosquito Gulf on 2nd August 1937, killing the pilot. Mail salvaged from the plane was dried at a local bakery and after application of the four-line cachet seen on these covers, was forwarded to its destination.

The upper cover was posted in Chile to New York and the lower registered cover from Argentina to Massachusetts.
