This cover postmarked New York / Wall Street was being carried eastwards by Western Air Express on Contract Air Mail route CAM4. The plane developed engine trouble and the pilot Howard B Cox was forced into a crash landing which resulted in the mail being either burnt or water soaked. The two-line cachet marking the crash was applied at Los Angeles in either purple or red. DAMAGED BY AIR PLANE WRECK/DECEMBER 22. 1930 The envelope had its US 5 cents stamp washed off.
